DREAM Lightweights Coming To Strikeforce
Following Gilbert Melendez’s win over Josh Thompson for the unified lightweight belt at Strikeforce: Evolution in December, Scott Coker revealed his interest of bringing in DREAM lightweight champion Shinya Aoki to the organization to face off against Melendez in a superfight.
Coker recently confirmed with MMA Weekly that he is still looking to make that fight happen, as well as have more DREAM lightweight fighters brought in to Strikeforce.
“We’re looking to bring other guys into our league for sure,” said Coker. “Like the Aoki’s, the Kawajiri’s, or JZ (Calvancante), or maybe even Joachim Hansen. These are the guys we want to have in our league for sure. We’re going to keep building that lightweight division. I guess the way I feel is if a guy like Aoki is available and he can fight your guy, Gilbert, your champion, why wouldn’t you put that fight together?”
Strikeforce and DREAM formed a partnership in 2009 to share fighters and create cross-promotional matches. It is apparent that Coker is wasting no time in making those big fights come to fruition.
